The first of a two-part panel discussion focusing on employment law issues that are being faced by South Africa’s retail sector.
In part one, we covered general COVID-19-related issues (such as screening of employees and customers, what to do if an employee tests positive, what to do if an employee has been in contact with someone who has tested positive, obligations in relation to vulnerable employees, what to do if an employee refuses to work due to alleged unsafe conditions, the requirements of ‘deep cleaning’, and whether one needs to close the entire store if an employee testes positive, etc.).
In part one we also discussed the need for restructuring and retrenchments that are likely to arise as a result of the pandemic.
In part two, we explore issues relating to employment equity and the casualisation of labour.
Both panel discussions are facilitated by Graham Damant, a seasoned employment law and benefits partner at Bowmans. Panel members include:

- Mendel Sass, Partner, Employment and Benefits, Bowmans
