INTERVIEW – Radio 702: Nadine Mather on privacy and publication of matric results

The practice of announcing the results of students who have completed their National Senior Certificate is now under scrutiny: the Information Regulator SA has banned the widespread publication of matric results, without prior consent, as it constitutes a breach of the provisions of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). Data Protection partner, Nadine Mather, joined Radio 702’s Aubrey Masango to discuss how this decision by the Regulator, and how has sparked a national debate about the need to balance the right to privacy with the principles of transparency and public access to information.
