With 44 days left for organisations to ensure compliance with the provisions of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) by 30 June 2021, the Information Regulator has recently made the online portal for registration of information officers available.

POPIA requires every responsible party to appoint and register an information officer, and potentially deputy information officers, with the Information Regulator by no later than 30 June 2021.

A responsible party can register its information officer by either:

  • completing and submitting the registration form via the online portal established by the Information Regulator; or
  • completing the registration form attached to the Guidance Note on Information Officers and Deputy Information Officers manually and submitting it to the Information Regulator’s offices (either by delivering the form to its physical address, or by emailing to: [email protected]).

With effect from yesterday (17 May), the online portal has been made available and can be accessed here.

In order to speed up the registration process, the Information Regulator has encouraged organisations to submit their applications for registration through the online portal.

Employers may find the Bowmans POPIA Toolkit for Employers of great assistance in getting POPIA-ready.
