Christopher Mann, Sullivan & Cromwell

I was so sorry to hear the devastating news of the loss of Rob. I know it has been two months of torture for the family and the Bowmans family. I really thought Rob was going to pull through. Rob and his family have been in the forefront of our minds here at S&C, and he and they have been on the prayer list at our little country Episcopal church in Millbrook, New York. I have already put Rob on the list for the Prayers for the Departed.

I know that Rob lost his brother earlier this year to COVID. Keeping that in mind, I send the below. It is no comfort to the firm or the family at this time, but maybe someday it will be.

What Is Dying?

A ship sails and I stand watching till she fades on the horizon and someone at my side says, “She is gone.” Gone where? Gone from sight, that is all: she is just as large as when I saw her. The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not in her, and just at the moment when someone at my side says, “She is gone,” there are others who are watching her coming, and other voices take up a glad shout. “Here she comes!”, and that is dying.

– Bishop Charles Henry Brent (1862-1929, an Episcopal Bishop born in Canada, who served in the Philippines and western New York state)

All the best to you and all our friends. Please send our condolences to all your partners.

I can hardly find the words to express my sadness at the loss of Rob and I send you and your partners my deepest condolences.

He was the best. A brilliant lawyer, a thoughtful and resonant leader, a generous and caring friend and just great fun. I smile when I think of him and am honoured to have known him.

Such a loss. Thinking of Kathryn, the children and you all.
