Taria is an Associate in our Intellectual Property and Telecommunications, Media and Technology (TMT) Department of our Nairobi Office.
With post-qualification experience in data privacy, technology law, and intellectual property law, Taria is a versatile lawyer with a keen interest in telecommunications, IP advisory and due diligence, privacy and data protection, and emerging technologies. She has a proven track record of providing legal support and transactional assistance to clients across various industries, including finance, real estate, and technology.
Taria is an Advocate of the High of Court of Kenya and a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/E).
Experience
* includes experience gained prior to joining Bowmans
- Advising Google on general aspects of Kenyan law including data privacy, undertaking legislative review, gambling, artificial intelligence and how the aforementioned affect Google products.
- Assisting data controllers and data processors with data protection compliance including but not limited to drafting of privacy policies, conducting data protection impact assessment and data protection trainings.
- Assisting with the management of trademark portfolios across Africa, including trademark registrations, oppositions, renewals, and portfolio maintenance within the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO), the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI), and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) of Getz Pharma, Diageo, Colgate-Palmolive, Jetlak Foods and the Scotch Whisky Association.
- Advising TikTok on personalized and non-personal adds by Over The Top (“OTT”) and Video on Demand (VOD”) Service Providers.
- Involved in reviewing and negotiating a variety of commercial intellectual property contracts, including software distribution agreements and software reseller agreements for CloudHop, retail store agreements and ERP software agreements for Twiga Foods Limited, licensing agreements, technology transfer agreements, and other related intellectual property contracts.
- Conducting intellectual property (IP) due diligence on technology companies including web hosting companies and edge-to-IoT computing companies, including assessing the validity, and enforceability of patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets; identifying potential IP risks and liabilities.
- Providing regulatory compliance services and drafting SAFE and Investor Agreements for pre-seed and Series A start-ups in Kenya across various sectors, including fintech, edtech, healthtech, and agrotech. Ensuring compliance with the Companies Act, Data Protection Act, and other relevant laws and regulations. *
- Providing comprehensive advisory services on various corporate and commercial matters, including business formation, corporate restructuring, intellectual property registration, statutory compliance, and data protection law. *
