James specialises in corporate commercial practice with a particular focus on cross-border M&A and mining matters.

James trained and worked for over 9 years in the Dar es Salaam office of an international law firm where he also briefly spent time on secondments in Dubai, London, Johannesburg and Nairobi offices. James worked on a wide range of corporate and commercial issues focusing on cross-border M&A transactions, capital markets, mining, oil and gas, energy, company formation and company secretarial services amongst others.

Experience

James has advised on:

  • Premier Solar Group, on the sale of a 50% stake in its East African operations to Starsight Energy, a West African commercial & industrial energy-as-a-service provider
  • Kopa Technologies Inc. on: (i) the sale of its East Africa business operations; and (ii) the sale of its pay-as-you go LPG technology and related assets/intellectual property rights to Circle Gas. This is reported to be the largest pure-private equity investment/acquisition in the clean cooking technology sector to date
  • A global energy company in relation to the acquisition of Liquid Bulk Storage Terminals in East Africa
  • A global energy company in relation to the disposal of the business and assets of the Kurasini Depot
  • An East Africa petroleum distribution company on an intra-group restructuring across Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania
  • A major Ethiopian cement company in relation to the proposed investment by a major Chinese cement company
  • Adenia Partners on its acquisition of the entire interest of a Kenyan Biosystems company (with subsidiaries in Tanzania and Uganda)
  • A Kenyan insurance company in relation to the disposal of its majority interest to a Moroccan insurance company
