South Africa’s Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport has invited interested parties to submit written comments on the Marine Pollution (Prevention of Pollution from Ships) Amendment Bill [B5-2002] by 21 October 2022. Further details are available from the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa’s website here. According to the Memorandum on the Objects of the Bill, in addition to giving effect to MARPOL Annex IV and Annex VI, the proposed amendments seek to increase fines in the event of non-compliance from ZAR 500 000 to ZAR 10 million and to increase the period of imprisonment from five to 10 years.
