Michael is a Senior Consultant in the Dispute Resolution Department of our Johannesburg office.
Michael specialises in alternative dispute resolution. Before joining Bowmans in 2018, he was employed for 25 years at Anglo American South Africa as in house counsel where he was responsible for a range of disciplines, including commercial, M&A and the management of several significant disputes in both the UK and SA, including mass tort and class action matters.
Michael has a BA degree from Cape Town University and an LLB degree from the University of the Witwatersrand.
- Michael represented Anglo American South Africa in the Occupational Lung Disease Working Group (comprising a number of South African mining companies) which engaged with stakeholders from government, labour and the mining industry to develop a comprehensive and sustainable solution to occupational lung disease compensation in the South African gold mining industry. This included the settlement, in 2018, of the silicosis and TB class action against the Working Group companies and other gold mining companies.
- In 2019 Michael was nominated by Anglo American South Africa to be a trustee of the Tshiamiso Trust (which was registered pursuant to the 2018 silicosis and TB class action settlement, to provide compensation to eligible claimants) where he currently chairs the Finance, Audit and Risk Committee.
- Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDER UK) accredited mediator.
